Swansea’s festive Christmas parade to bring joy and sparkle to the city centre

Swansea’s much-anticipated annual Christmas Parade, organised by Swansea Council, is set to light up the city centre on Sunday (Nov 17), just five weeks before Christmas. This free, family-friendly procession promises a magical evening on its journey from Victoria Road at 5pm to The Kingsway, with an estimated finish time of 6.30pm.

The parade will dazzle spectators with giant, illuminated floats that fill the streets with vibrant colour and festive spirit. Along the route, lively performers and marching bands will add to the atmosphere, filling the air with cheerful holiday tunes that bring the Christmas spirit to life. Children and families will also spot beloved fairy-tale and movie characters waving along the route, adding to the festive joy.

Councillor Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration, and Tourism, expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “Christmas is one of the most important times of the year for the city centre, and the Christmas parade is the perfect way for families to kick off the festive countdown. The parade is unmissable and this year we’re expecting it to be as big and bold as ever, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure.”

The highlight of the event will be Santa himself, who will make a special appearance to switch on Swansea’s Christmas lights, marking the official start of the season. New this year, an impressive sleigh sculpted entirely from ice will be unveiled on the day, allowing visitors to step inside and capture an unforgettable festive photo.

Community groups from Swansea will also take part, showcasing their talents with colourful costumes, holiday routines, and performances that highlight the city’s vibrant festive spirit. Councillor Francis-Davies commented, “The Christmas Parade is always a highlight of our festive calendar. This year, we’re aiming to create a true Christmas carnival atmosphere, full of light, music, and dancing. It’s been a challenging year for many, so we’re thrilled to be able to bring this amazing celebration back to life.”

Event Information and Travel Advice

Road Closures and Parking Restrictions:
To ensure the parade runs smoothly, road closures will be in place along the parade route. Rolling closures will begin at 4pm, with additional restrictions on East Burrows Road and Somerset Place from 2pm until approximately 8pm. Parking restrictions will be enforced along key routes, including Princess Way, Caer Street, Castle Street, High Street, and The Kingsway.

A Park and Ride service will be available from Fabian Way, operating every 15 minutes from 2pm to 5.15pm, and running continuously until 8pm after the parade. The cost per vehicle is £1, and the service will drop off and pick up passengers at the Quadrant Bus Station. Visitors are advised to allow extra time for travel as traffic is expected to be busy in the city centre.

To make travel easier, Swansea’s Free Ride offer will be extended until 9pm on the night of the parade. While bus stops along the parade route will be closed between 4pm and 6.30pm, the Quadrant Bus Station remains open for passenger services.
