Swansea’s Palace Theatre reopens with new name and purpose after major restoration

SWANSEA’S iconic Palace Theatre has reopened today (Nov 7) under a new name and purpose, unveiling its transformation into Tramshed Tech’s latest location and marking a milestone in the city’s £1 billion regeneration project.

Originally built in 1888, the landmark building has undergone a meticulous three-year restoration, spearheaded by Swansea Council and funded with over £6.9 million from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns initiative. The historic six-floor building now offers cutting-edge workspaces tailored for tech, digital, and creative enterprises.

Key architectural features, including the decorative iron balcony, original Ebbw Vale brickwork, and restored floor tiles, have been preserved, honoring the building’s rich history. The theatre’s historic stage has also been reimagined as a versatile event and collaborative work area.

The restoration, managed by council officers and executed with R&M Williams, GWP Architecture, Hydrock (now Stantec), and TC Consult, showcases a careful balance between heritage conservation and modern functionality.

Swansea Council Leader Cllr Rob Stewart expressed pride in the project, stating: “It’s amazing to see this fantastic piece of Swansea’s heritage saved, restored, and given a new lease of life for future generations to enjoy. The transformation of the Palace has been carried out with such care and attention to detail, a real credit to all involved.

“With capacity for over 300 people, I look forward to seeing local businesses make the Palace Theatre building their home. The Palace holds a special place in Swansea’s heart, and I’m delighted it will continue to be cherished for years to come.

“Before the council acquired the building nearly five years ago, it was in an alarming state of disrepair, at risk of being lost forever. I thank the council officers, contractors, and all partners who have brought this unique and remarkable building back to life.”
