INITIAL proposals to improve three more neighbourhood skate parks in Swansea will soon be revealed.
Workshops are being held on Saturday November 23 where skateboarders, wheeled sports enthusiasts and members of the public can give feedback on early designs for the skate park areas at Townhill’s Phoenix Centre, Mynydd Newydd in Penlan and Coed Bach in Pontarddulais.
Here are the details of the workshops organised for each proposed development:
Townhill Skatepark
10:00am – 11:30pm – Phoenix Centre, Townhill (please ask at Reception on arrival) – Powys Ave, Townhill, Swansea, SA1 6PH
Mynydd Newydd Skatepark
12.30pm – 14:00pm – Penlan Leisure Centre, Penlan (please ask at Reception on arrival) – Heol Gwyrosydd, Penlan, Swansea, SA5 7BU
Coed Bach Park Skatepark
15:00pm – 16:30pm – Mechanics Institute, Pontarddulais (main hall) – 45 St Teilo St, Pontarddulais, Swansea, SA4 8SY
Proposed improvements to these three skate parks form part of a Swansea Council investment worth over £2m in skateboarding and wheeled sports facilities across the city.
The latest workshops – which will only focus on these three sites – follow on from a workshop held in October where early designs for Victoria Park were discussed to explore whether a street plaza-style facility would work at the current location of the skate ramp there.
The council is working closely with local communities and a specialist company called Curve Studio to develop a skateboarding and wheel sports masterplan for the city.
Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “We know how popular skateboarding and wheeled sports are in Swansea.
“This is why we’re investing more than £2m in these facilities to give our young people and skateboarders and wheel sports fans of all ages access to greatly improved facilities.
“The workshop we held last month about proposals for the skate ramp area at Victoria Park was very well-attended, and the experts at Curve Studio are now tweaking their early designs for that site to further meet the needs of skateboarders and the local community.
“We’re anticipating lots of interest in our early design proposals for the facilities in Townhill, Mynydd Newydd and Coed Bach too, as we set about transforming Swansea into one of the UK’s best cities for skateboarding and wheeled sports.
“As part of our overall plan, most people in Swansea won’t have to travel more than two miles to reach an improved skateboarding or wheel sports facility.”
Similar workshops will follow in other areas of the city in future where improvements to skateboarding and wheel sports facilities will have maximum impact.
The workshops follow an online consultation and drop-in events held earlier this year. Over 300 people took part, helping Curve Studio get further knowledge of the public’s views and to scope out potential sites.
