Sporting excellence honoured at special awards ceremony

Sporting excellence was recognised and honoured at a special awards ceremony held last month.

The Môn Actif Sports Awards 2023 saw some of the Island’s finest athletes, coaches and volunteers celebrated for their achievements.

Teams and individuals were shortlisted for a variety of prestigious awards during the ceremony hosted by former Wales international footballer, Owain Tudur Jones, at Beaumaris Leisure Centre.

Môn Actif Young Ambassador, Eli Jones, from Ysgol David Hughes, opened the event before several guest speakers presented the awards. The evening also received special support from the Seindorf Beaumaris Band.

It was the first ceremony since the COVD pandemic with over 500 award nominations received.

Môn Actif Sports Development Manager Barry Edwards said, “The event celebrated outstanding individual and team sporting achievements over the past two years, and it also recognised the hard work that takes place by coaches and volunteers across the County on a weekly basis. Thanks to their hard work, people of all ages and abilities can participate in their chosen activities.”

“I would like to thank all the guest speakers, dignitaries, sponsors and everyone who attended this special evening. The event also helped highlight the importance of community engagement and Môn Actif will be looking to further strengthen local collaboration to help expand sporting provisions on Anglesey. We now look forward to the 2024 Ceremony and building on this successful year.”

Leisure portfolio holder, Councillor Neville Evans added, “It was a fantastic evening, highlighting the wonderful sporting achievements by Anglesey residents and clubs. I hope it will inspire both children and adults to be more active and to take part in new activities, helping to bring communities together and to promote a healthy way of living.”

Chief Executive Officer, Dylan Williams said, “It was great to see the wide array of talent we have on Anglesey. I’d like to congratulate all nominees and I’d like to thank everyone involved with organising the event. It’s important to celebrate achievements as well as recognising hard working individuals that help enable sporting participation.”

“The evening provided an opportunity for the Council to champion its sportspeople and their fantastic achievements over the past 12 months. Taking every opportunity to champion the Island and the success of its residents is one of our core values as an organisation.”
