New signals set to improve traffic flow at busy town centre junction

WORK to replace ageing traffic signals on one of Bridgend’s busiest junctions will start on 22 July.

The work, which will also include pedestrian crossing lights, will take place at the Coity Road / Rotary International Way junction near Bridgend town Centre and is expected to take up to four weeks to complete.

It will replace the existing signals, which are almost 30 years old, with all-new energy efficient modern lights identical to the ones that have already helped to improve traffic flows and waiting times at the nearby A473 junction between Park Street and Angel Street.

These essential works will help to avoid any unplanned failure of the signals, which would bring severe disruption to the area. The current equipment is also no longer widely used and produced in the industry and is becoming compromised by corrosion.

Temporary signals will be in place for the duration of the work, which has been scheduled to take place during the school summer holidays in order to minimise inconvenience.

Councillor Paul Davies, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment, said: “The traffic and pedestrian crossing lights at this busy town centre location have done a fantastic job for the best part of three decades, but the time has come to replace them with modern versions which will be far more efficient and effective.

“At 48 volts, the new lights will also be far cheaper to run than the current system, which requires 230 volts, so we can expect to see significant cost savings over the lifetime of these new signals.

“Every effort is being made to minimise inconvenience and to finish the upgrade as quickly as possible. I would like to thank the public for their understanding and cooperation ahead of these important and essential works.”
