Sam Rowlands MS supports energy from waste plant in North Wales

Sam Rowlands, MS for North Wales with Miles Waistle from enfinium

SAM ROWLANDS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, has sponsored an event to highlight the work of a resource recovery operator in Deeside.

Mr Rowlands, a keen supporter of encouraging recycling and a circular economy, welcomed representatives to the Welsh Parliament from enfinium, a leading UK energy from waste operator, with a site at Parc Adfer in Deeside.

He said: “I recently visited the North Wales site and I was delighted to sponsor an event to highlight the work which is being done to reduce waste across Wales.

“Enfinium is a leading UK company in its field and has a very important role to play in providing energy from the waste which can’t be recycled, keeping this out of landfill. It was good to be able to welcome them to the Welsh Parliament and share this information with fellow Senedd members.

“It also gave enfinium the opportunity to talk about the Repair Cafés they are encouraging people to set up near all their UK sites including the one in Flintshire, North Wales.

“These days it is all too easy to replace rather than repair items and I am really pleased to see funds being offered to fix repairable goods, reduce waste and save money for families.

“It is really important that we continue to reduce and recycle waste and Repair Cafés offer everyone the opportunity to do their bit to help this cause.”

Enfinium, based at Parc Adfer, Deeside process non-recycable waste from Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire, preventing this waste from entering landfill by using this resource to generate electricity – enough to power 45,000 homes. Enfinium are also looking to invest £200m into the site to install carbon capture technology as part of the HyNet cluster, which would decarbonise North Wales’s residual waste and transform Parc Adfer into the largest carbon removals project in Wales – putting the ‘net’ in net zero.

They recently launched an annual fund to support the UK wide efforts to reduce waste by committing £60,000 over a three-year period to help Repair Cafés within the vicinity of its UK operations fix repairable goods, reduce waste, and save families money.

A Repair Café is a community-based not-for-profit, often with charitable status, offering free repairs of common household items such as toasters, hoovers and bicycles. Every item repaired saves a family from the undue expense of buying a replacement. Research has shown that extending a product’s lifespan can lead to significant emissions savings. For example, maintaining a single television for an additional  seven years results in a carbon emission saving of 657kg.
