That’s a wrap, ‘butt!’: Gavin and Stacey finish filming final episode ahead of Christmas Day farewell

The cast of Gavin and Stacey has wrapped filming “for the last time ever,” the BBC has confirmed. Fans have been eagerly trying to catch glimpses of the stars over recent months as they filmed the much-anticipated final Christmas special, which is set to air in December 2024.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the BBC shared: “And that’s a wrap… for the last time ever. See you on Christmas Day! #GavinAndStacey.”

The beloved sitcom, which first aired in 2007, follows the relationship between Gavin, from Essex, and Stacey, from Barry, South Wales. Written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, who also star as best friends Smithy and Nessa, the show became a hit for its relatable characters, witty dialogue, and heart-warming moments. It explored the dynamics between the couple’s families and friends, blending humour with touching portrayals of modern British life.

Gavin and Stacey gained a devoted fan base and won several awards during its original run, including BAFTAs and British Comedy Awards. The show’s last regular episode aired in 2010, but the 2019 Christmas special marked a triumphant return, achieving the highest overnight festive ratings in 12 years, with an average of 11.6 million viewers. By the New Year, it had been seen by 17.1 million people, making it the most-watched scripted programme of the decade at the time. That episode also earned the Impact Award at the 2020 National Television Awards.

The final festive episode of Gavin and Stacey will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on Christmas Day, 25th December 2024.
