New app brings fresh enjoyment to historic parts of Swansea

SMARTPHONE users can now use their devices to explore the history, culture and stories of Swansea.

The free Tawe Trails app – launched last week (May 14) – offers facts, interactive maps and audio guides on six heritage trails in the Lower Swansea Valley.

Those who download it can discover the area’s natural beauty and heritage.

Available in English and Welsh including audio, it’s been developed by Swansea Council’s regeneration team and funded by the UK Government through the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF).

Council cabinet member Robert Francis Davies said: “We’re regenerating the Lower Swansea Valley and this new app will help people understand why the area’s so important to the whole city.

“It’ll help tell the story of Swansea’s rich industrial legacy to new generations.

“The area was the heart of Swansea’s great copper industry for many years so it’s fantastic that we’re spreading knowledge and understanding of it in this way.

“This is an exciting time for that area as we and others plan to invest tens of millions of pounds there.

“Our £1bn regeneration of Swansea continues!”

The six trails covered by the app are:

  • Hafod Morfa Copperworks
  • White Rock
  • Parc Llewelyn
  • Swansea Canal at Clydach
  • Morriston Park
  • Lower Swansea Valley

Features of the app include satellite views and street views, waypoint pins, high quality images, selfie postcard frames, accessibility settings and offline functionality.

A launch event took place last week at the historic Morriston Tabernacle, a Grade I listed building featured on the app.

Elsewhere, in the Lower Swansea Valey, a planning application for a major outdoor leisure destination by world-class operator Skyline has been approved.

Historic buildings such as the Vivian and Musgrave Engine Houses are being saved and repurposed for future generations. A Penderyn Distillery base operates nearby, partly in sensitively restored buildings.

The Tawe Trails app is available through the iTunes store and Google Play.
