A NEW mayor for the borough of Neath Port Talbot has been elected at the authority’s annual meeting of council alongside a returning leader.
Melin-born councillor, Wayne Carpenter, was sworn in as the mayor of the borough at a meeting held in May of 2025.
His appointment came alongside a separate vote for leader of the authority, with independent councillor Steve Hunt of Crynant, Onllwyn and Seven Sisters continuing in the role for the 2025-26 financial year.

Councillor Carpenter of Neath East is known in the community for being a professional singer, as well as an ordained reverend.
He will now take over the role as mayor from Cllr Matthew Crowley, with Cllr Alan Lockyer acting as his deputy mayor for the term.
Speaking after his appointment, Cllr Carpenter said: “It’s a great honour and privilege for us to be inaugurated as mayor and mayoress of Neath Port Talbot Council.
“This authority recognises the importance of economic prosperity and works towards making Neath Port Talbot a thriving, forward looking, confident place where people want to live, work and visit.”
Newly returning leader Cllr Steve Hunt added: “I am truly honoured to stand before you today as to continue in the role of leader of Neath Port Talbot Council for a third consecutive year.
“Can I thank you for your trust and confidence in me. This renewed commitment serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication we all share in serving our communities.
“Over the past year we have faced challenges that have tested our resilience but together we have risen to meet each one with determination and collaboration.”
