THE SISTER of Meirion James, who died in police custody in 2015 at Haverfordwest Police, has told an inquest at County Hall this afternoon (Jan 11) that she blames the GP.
Sobbing, she said ‘if only the GP had done something’.
On the day before Mr James’ death, she said she spoke to two medical professionals.
First, she rang Bronglais Hospital and asked the staff to keep her in for psychiatric assessment, after he was taken there by police following an incident with another motorist in Llanrhystud.
She said the doctor on the phone ‘got a bit aggressive’ and asked her ‘are you trying to tell me how to do my job?’ before hanging up on her.
She then called the family GP, Dr Martin Mackintosh, who yesterday (Jan 10) had to help a juror with a medical emergency.
He advised her to ‘urge the hospital’ to make a full mental health assessment.
She said: “He’s the GP, I’m not the professional. They are.
“If only the GP had done what he should have done.”
The inquest continues.
