AMMANFORD secured a comfortable but much needed 58 run victory over Port Talbot Town at the Park.
Winning the toss, skipper Alun Evans wisely decided to bat on a fast and even track with a lightning outfield.
Despite losing a wicket off the second ball, opener Kurtis Marsh (82) and Daniel Roberts (51) put on a hundred stand for the second wicket to take Ammanford to 102 for 2.
This was followed by a half century stand for the fourth wicket between Marsh and Evans (75) who had properly moved himself up the order.
A further partnership of 90 between Evans and Josef Davies (43) took the home team to a commanding 250 for 5, enabling Rhys Huw Davies (35) and Craig Maloney (26no) to plunder the remaining overs. Ammanford closed on 336 for 7.
Joseph Voke was Port Talbot’s chief wicket taker with 3 for 63, while Stuart Phelps took 2 for 49.
Ammanford looked to be going for an early finish in the heat with Port Talbot at 18 for 2, but captain Barney Huxtable (87) and Joseph Voke (25) steadied the ship with a half century stand.
Further partnerships of 68 between Huxtable and Cian Davies (41), and 62 between Davies and Mark Cox (32) delayed the inevitable conclusion, but Port Talbot were never really up with the required run rate from which to attack Ammanford’s commanding total. They finished their 50 overs on 278 for 8.
For Ammanford, the wickets were equitably shared between Dan Roberts (2-59), Owen Davies (2-63), Alun Evans (2-44) and the most economical Josef Davies (2-29).
The victory moved Ammanford up to seventh place, leaving Port Talbot to leapfrog Clydach out of bottom position.
Next week Ammanford make their shortest away trip to visit neighbours Pontarddulais, who are just 2 points ahead of them in Premier One.
Ammanford seconds thump Port Talbot
AMMANFORD seconds made it a record breaking high-scoring double as they smashed Port Talbot at the New Mansel by 159 runs.
Ammanford must have been delighted to be invited to bat first, and Fraser Benjamin and captain Jamie Evans both made hay while the sun shone with excellent centuries, Evans being unbeaten.
Cellan Allcock (30) and Benjamin Thomas (32) played useful supporting roles, enabling Ammanford to reach an imperious 335 for 6 in their 45 overs.
This was one less than the firsts scored but the seconds took 5 fewer overs.
A daunting afternoon chasing leather in the field had left the home team dispirited, and despite a half
century from captain Sam Tobin (58), they crumbled to 176 all out inside 32 overs.
Iestyn Jones and Benjamin Thomas took 3 wickets each for Ammanford while Cian Roach picked up a
couple.
Thirds beat Clydach
AMMANNFORD thirds made it a treble weekend for the club’s teams as they beat Clydach by 34 runs in a low scoring game at the Rec.
Batting first, Ammanford scored 124 all out. Captain Josh Davies top scored with 27, supported by Steve Hagget (20) and Dafydd Wyn Jones (19).
Llyr Griffiths was Clydach’s top wicket taker with 4 for 9.
Ammanford took just 27 overs to dismiss Clydach’s batsmen for 90, despite 25 from opener Mark Todd.
Sion Davies, Jac Davies and Hari Lloyd picked up a couple of wickets each for Ammanford.
