COVID has been the leading cause of deaths in Wales since November 2020.
But, thanks to lockdowns and vaccinations, things are changing according to The Office of National Statistics (ONS) with Covid-related deaths in Wales falling significantly in March for a second month in a row.
Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and Heart disease have now both overtaken Covid as the biggest causes of death in Wales.
Some communities across Wales, about a third, had no Covid-related deaths at all in March.
The mortality rate in March was highest on Anglesey with Covid accounting for 174.9 deaths per 100,000.
6.3% of registered deaths across Wales in March were Covid-related, those numbers are down from 22.2% in February and 35.2% in January.
Covid-19’s mortality rate in Wales has dropped to 65.2 deaths per 100,000 in March – the lowest rate it has been since September 2020.
This “significant decrease” in the mortality rate is echoed across both male and female statistics, although the male mortality (64.3 deaths per 100,000) was a little higher than for women (62.6).
Since the pandemic started, 13 months ago, the Covid mortality rate in Wales equals 186.3 deaths per 100,000.
Rhondda Cynon Taf has the highest number, 319 deaths per 100,000, however this is followed very closely by Merthyr Tydfil (312.2).
The county with the lowest mortality rate is Gwynedd, which has 67.4.
Covid has caused deaths across most of the country in the last 13 months with only one area, Llandudno Junction South & Llasanffraid Glan Conwy, escaping unscathed with no Covid-related deaths taking place throughout the pandemic so far.
