IT was a case of third time lucky for a Holyhead councillor who is heading to Buckingham Palace for one of the most prestigious Royal events of the year.
Anglesey County Councillor Glyn Haynes is “honoured and delighted” to have been invited to a garden party in the same week as the Coronation of King Charles III.
Only three Royal garden parties are hosted at the palace annually, but this year’s event on Tuesday, May 9, is only three days after the Westminster Abbey Coronation, on Saturday, May 6.
The last two times Cllr Haynes received the special invite Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II would have been in attendance. Sadly the events were cancelled amid the Covid situation.
However, now Cllr Haynes has been invited again, and will represent the island and Anglesey County Council with his partner Helen Hibbert.
The Labour Parc a’r Mynydd ward, councillor said: “I am absolutely over the moon, just delighted. It is an absolute honour to be invited but also to represent the island and the Ynys Môn County Council.
“I was so disappointed before, when the previous invitations were cancelled.
“It is tinged with a little sadness that I didn’t get to go when Her Majesty the Queen would have been there, but it is just amazing to be going during all the Coronation celebrations for King Charles.”
Cllr Haynes was Chairman of Anglesey County Council for 2021-2022, and is also an Armed Forces Champion for the council.
He was a Merchant Seaman for 20 years and as an Able Seaman says, “with many years served ‘deep sea’.”
He then went on to work at MEM, which was later acquired by the Eaton Corporation. There he became a full-time Union Convenor, Vice-Chairman of the European Works Council and Trustee Director of the Pension Scheme.
After being made redundant from Eaton he became a Trades Union tutor, also sitting on the regional and national bodies of Unite the Union, as well as being a Branch Secretary for the North West Wales General branch.
Simultaneously, he was elected as a County Councillor for Holyhead in 2017 and also as a Holyhead Town Councillor two years later, being re-elected again last year.
His partner, Helen works in the office as admin for DU Construction in Holyhead.
