Payment delays hit Nationwide Building Society

All payments to and from the Nationwide Building Society to other building societies and banks are currently experiencing delays. The institution has confirmed that direct debits and standing orders are functioning as usual. However, money transfers to external entities are affected, although transactions within Nationwide accounts remain unaffected, as stated on their website. The institution expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured customers of efforts to restore normalcy promptly.

“We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as we can,” the statement assured concerned customers.

Despite the challenges, Nationwide reassures customers that they can still utilise their cards for online and in-store purchases, access banking apps, and withdraw funds from ATMs.

There have been reports indicating the ramifications of these issues. One customer, Rachel Jones, shared his predicament, expressing concerns about potential repercussions on his mortgage payments.

“I’m unable to make payments which may affect my mortgage,” she lamented.

Jones urgently attempted to transfer funds to another building society to redeem his mortgage, particularly since it coincided with the final day of his mortgage’s fixed interest rate.

“It had to be today to avoid penalties,” she said.

However, her efforts were hindered by a “technical error” encountered during the transfer process. Notably, there was no indication that the payment was queued for processing, exacerbating the situation.

According to reports from Downdetector, issues with Nationwide’s services began surfacing around 02:00 this morning, causing widespread inconvenience among customers.

Founded in 1884, Nationwide Building Society holds the distinction of being the largest building society in the UK. Presently, the institution is actively pursuing the acquisition of Virgin Money in a monumental £2.9 billion deal, aimed at establishing the UK’s second-largest mortgage and savings group.
