Met Office issues warning for strong winds ahead of Easter

AS Storm Nelson looms, the Met Office has issued a cautionary alert for robust winds set to buffet coastal areas, potentially reaching speeds of 70mph. This advisory precedes an Easter weekend marked by tempestuous weather, although a turn towards milder conditions is anticipated.

Southern England’s coastal regions have been placed under a yellow warning for strong winds, effective from 7am to 6pm on Thursday. This warning swathes across locales such as St Ives and Penzance in the South West, extending eastward to Brighton.

Meteorologists have underscored the potential hazards accompanying these gusts, with the risk of hail and thunder looming large. “Strong winds and large coastal waves may lead to hazardous conditions,” the Met Office cautioned. Transport networks, particularly ferry services, could experience disruptions, and there exists a slight chance of power outages.

Christopher England, a weather producer at Sky News, forewarned of robust coastal gusts, intertwined with heavy, squally showers that may unleash hail and thunder. “It’ll stay mostly unsettled into next week, with further heavy showers or longer spells of rain, and 70mph gusts near Channel coasts tomorrow, thanks to the Spanish-named Storm Nelson,” England explained. However, a gradual easing of showers and a shift towards milder weather are on the horizon as the weekend unfolds.

Londoners may find solace in the forecast, with temperatures expected to soar to 14°C (57°F) on Saturday, surpassing the mercury in Madrid. Wednesday is slated to witness outbreaks of rain across England and Wales, while Northern Ireland braces for continued showers. Scotland, however, anticipates a dry spell overnight.

Looking towards the Easter weekend, Good Friday is projected to usher in blustery showers, particularly concentrated in southern and western regions. Saturday may see a continuation of this showery pattern in the same areas, though northern and eastern locales could enjoy brighter skies. Easter Sunday promises to be the highlight of the week, with favourable conditions prevailing before a return to unsettled weather on Monday.
