Hafod forest being cleared due to tree disease outbreak

A forest clearance operation is currently in progress due to tree diseases, as reported by Natural Resources Wales. Efforts are underway to remove approximately 16.1 acres (6.5 hectares) of forest located on the Hafod Estate near Aberystwyth in Ceredigion.

According to NRW, the affected trees, including mature Noble Fir trees that line the car park entrance, have deteriorated to a point where they pose safety risks. A spokesperson for the organisation noted that the trees are now in a state of poor health, exhibiting signs of rapid die-back.

Alan Wilson, a member of NRW’s forest operations team in mid Wales, explained that many trees are experiencing significant bark loss, further highlighting the urgency of the situation.

“If the trees were to remain, they would become unstable and at risk of falling in an uncontrolled way, making this a serious safety concern for walkers as well as the heritage sites,” he added.

NRW announced plans to rejuvenate the area by introducing a variety of broadleaf tree species, a move intended to enhance the region’s biodiversity.
