61% of people in Wales oppose 20mph default speed limit

Get ready for 20mph

The majority of individuals in Wales, as indicated by a recent poll, do not support the implementation of the default 20mph speed limit for the country.

The survey reveals that 61% of respondents expressed opposition to the change, which is scheduled to take effect this Sunday.

Starting on September 17, the majority of 30mph roads in Wales will transition to a 20mph speed limit. This initiative, dubbed by the Welsh Government as “the biggest step-change in road safety in a generation” is expected to enhance the quality of life and safety for residents.

Over 1000 people in Wales were asked the following question: “In September the default speed limit in residential areas in Wales is falling from 30mph to 20mph. To what extent do you support or oppose this speed limit reduction?”

Here are the breakdowns of the responses:

  • Strongly support: 11%
  • Tend to support: 22%
  • Tend to oppose: 22%
  • Strongly oppose: 39%

This totals to 33% in favor and 61% in opposition, with 6% of respondents indicating they were unsure. The survey, conducted by ITV Wales/YouGov Barn Cymru, involved 1,051 participants and was conducted between September 1 and 6, 2023.
