Boy, 12, and grandfather tragically die in camping trip incident

A 12-year-old boy and his grandfather have tragically been found dead during a camping trip, believed to be the result of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, an inquest has heard.

Kaicy Brown, aged 12, and his grandfather, David Brown, 66, were discovered unresponsive in their tent during a family camping trip in Powys, Wales. It is suspected that a cooking stove may have caused the fatal carbon monoxide leak.

The discovery was made by Kaicy’s uncle, who was staying in a neighbouring tent, on the morning following the tragedy. The family, who had travelled over 200 miles from Earley, Berkshire, had been camping overnight when the incident occurred on Saturday, 14th September.

Senior coroner Graeme Hughes, speaking at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court, confirmed that toxicology tests would be conducted to determine the carbon monoxide levels in Kaicy’s blood. Offering his sympathies, Hughes told the family: “My deepest condolences to all of you for the loss of both Kaicy and David in such tragic circumstances.”

Emergency services were called to the scene, but sadly, despite their efforts, neither Kaicy nor David could be saved.

The inquest, which has now been adjourned, also heard that an investigation is underway into the death of David Brown, who was from Wokingham, Berkshire. Further details will be provided at a later date once the inquiry concludes.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a fundraising page has been set up to support Kaicy’s mother, Jessica, who has suffered the devastating loss of both her son and her father. The page states: “On 15th September, the unimaginable happened to her son Kaicy, 12, and her father. They passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning on a camping trip.

“The money raised will go towards funeral costs, a memorial, and legal fees as Jess wants to bring her boy home. There are disputes within the family about where he will be laid to rest, and we don’t want her to go through any more hardship at this difficult time.”

It adds: “Any donations would be greatly appreciated to help relieve the financial burden of this tragic accident and to assist other families in need.”

The tragic deaths of Kaicy and his grandfather serve as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, particularly in enclosed spaces like tents. An investigation into the precise circumstances of the incident remains ongoing.
