Gavin and Stacey: Christmas Day special confirmed

In a long-awaited announcement, it has been confirmed that the final episode of the much-loved BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey will air on Christmas Day this year. Co-writers James Corden and Ruth Jones made the revelation on Friday, unveiling a picture of the completed script titled ‘The Finale’ on Instagram.

Originally spanning three series from 2007 to 2010, Gavin and Stacey returned for a Christmas special in 2019, leaving fans hanging on a cliffhanger. This festive season, viewers eagerly anticipate discovering if Smithy and Nessa (portrayed by Corden and Jones) will finally unite, and whether the details of the enigmatic “fishing trip” will be unveiled.

Corden shared the news on Instagram, stating: “Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”

The series finale will air on BBC One, following its transition from BBC Three where it initially thrived under Baby Cow Productions.

While the central narrative revolves around the cross-country romance of Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page), the show’s appeal also stems from its colourful ensemble cast, notably the oddball duo of Smithy and Nessa, Uncle Bryn played by Rob Brydon, and Pam portrayed by Alison Steadman.

Jones had previously dismissed speculation of the series’ return, labelling it “sadly a rumour” during an interview on RTE Radio 1 in February. However, after the 2019 special concluded with Nessa proposing to Smithy (spoiler alert!), the inevitability of tying up loose ends beckoned the show back for a final hurrah.
