HBO reveals stars of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series

HBO has officially unveiled the new faces set to lead its ambitious, decade-spanning adaptation of Harry Potter, with three young British actors cast in the roles of Harry, Hermione and Ron.

Following a nationwide casting search, newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will step into the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. All three were chosen through open auditions for British children aged 9 to 11, underscoring HBO’s commitment to nurturing new British talent in bringing the beloved story to life.

“These three young actors lit up the room,” said executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod in a joint statement. “The chemistry between them is undeniable. We can’t wait for audiences to meet them.”

The trio will lead the series across seven planned seasons, with each instalment dedicated to one book from J.K. Rowling’s original series.

A distinguished supporting ensemble

The broader cast draws together an eclectic mix of established talent, including celebrated stage and screen actors. Among those confirmed:

  • John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
  • Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
  • Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
  • Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
  • Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell
  • Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch

Lithgow’s casting as Dumbledore marks a departure from previous British portrayals, though HBO is positioning the choice as a move towards emotional depth and theatrical gravitas. McTeer, a two-time Olivier Award winner, is expected to bring sharp authority and poise to Professor McGonagall.

Essiedu’s casting as Snape has been widely praised for its dramatic potential, while Frost’s interpretation of Hagrid is likely to balance humour with heart. Thallon and Whitehouse round out a compelling ensemble with a blend of intensity and wit.

A new vision behind the scenes

The series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials) as showrunner, with Mark Mylod directing several episodes. The project is a collaboration between HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and Brontë Film and TV.

Production is expected to begin later this year, with an anticipated premiere date in 2026.

The series, according to HBO, will be a “faithful and expansive adaptation” of Rowling’s novels, offering the depth and detail that the original films, due to time constraints, often had to omit.

Rowling’s involvement and public debate

J.K. Rowling will return as an executive producer on the project, retaining creative control over key aspects of the Wizarding World. Her continued involvement has sparked controversy due to her public statements on gender identity, which have drawn criticism from portions of the fanbase and the original film’s stars.

In response, HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys addressed the issue in April.

“We already have a show with her on air. These are her personal political views. They are not influencing this adaptation,” Bloys stated. “If you want to debate her, go on Twitter. This show is about the books.”

Reimagining a modern classic

The new adaptation will be streamed globally on Max (soon to be renamed from HBO Max). The intention is to remain loyal to the spirit of the books while allowing for a broader, more culturally grounded reinterpretation—potentially including more diverse casting and British regional representation.

Locations are still under wraps, though industry sources suggest that Wales and the Scottish Highlands are strong contenders for key settings, adding visual richness to the series’ magical landscape.

A new era for the wizarding world

The first season is scheduled to premiere nearly 30 years after Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in 1997, and 15 years after the conclusion of the original film franchise.

For a new generation of fans—and for longtime readers who grew up with the books—the series promises a return to the heart of the story: a tale of friendship, courage and magic set in the enchanting world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The boy who lived is ready to live again.
