On September 30th, 2023, a magnificent statue paying tribute to the renowned Welsh comedian, singer, and entertainer, Max Boyce, will be revealed in his hometown of Glynneath.
Max Boyce, who was granted the Freedom of the Borough of Neath Talbot in recognition of his charitable endeavours and unwavering dedication to his community in 2014, boasts a career spanning back to the 1970s, during which he has sold over two million albums.
Max Boyce will mark his 80th birthday just a few days before the unveiling ceremony, which will be officiated by Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford and Louise Fleet, the Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan.
The bronze statue, a creation by the acclaimed local artist Rubin Eynon, will be positioned facing Abernant Park, the cherished home ground of Max Boyce’s Glynneath RFC. Please note that there will be road closures in effect from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on the day of the event.
Residents of Glynneath, as well as fans, supporters, and Max Boyce enthusiasts from Wales, the UK, and beyond, are cordially invited to attend the unveiling ceremony, scheduled to run from 11:30 AM to 1:40 PM on Saturday, September 30th, 2023.
Funding for the statue has been sourced through local Community Grants, and it is destined to serve as an iconic emblem welcoming visitors to Glynneath and the surrounding communities.
Cllr Cen Phillips, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Nature, Tourism and Wellbeing, said: “We are delighted Glynneath RFC is honouring its Club President with this unique event. The dedication and support Max has provided to Glynneath RFC over the years and to his local community has been truly remarkable.
“I know the club has expressed its gratitude to funders Selar Opencast Community Fund, Aberpergwm Community Fund and the Maesgwyn Wind Farm Community Fund. This honour for Max Boyce is richly deserved.”
After the official unveiling ceremony, attendees are welcome to return to Abernant Park to witness a Division 1 West Central league match between Glynneath RFC 1st XV and Ystradgynlais RFC. Before the kick-off at 3:00 PM, the Band of the Royal Welsh will provide entertainment on the field.
In the evening, an exclusive dinner will be hosted within the clubhouse for invited guests. The entire event has been coordinated by Glynneath RFC in partnership with the Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan’s office.
