Former Idols Nightclub to be transformed into vibrant bar with Danish operator’s £1.5m investment

DANISH late night operator, REKOM, is investing £1.5 million to transform the former Idols nightclub on Wind Street in Swansea into Proud Mary, a new bar set to open this autumn. The Grade II listed old post office building will undergo careful restoration to recapture its former glory, complete with an uplifted façade, ornate ceilings, and cornices. The ambitious project will also include the creation of a spacious outdoor area.

Proud Mary Cardiff, the first Proud Mary bar to open in the UK, has enjoyed tremendous success, and REKOM is confident that the Swansea branch will follow suit. Russell Quelch, REKOM’s country director, expressed his excitement about the upcoming venture, saying, “We are delighted to be bringing our second Proud Mary to Swansea and we are confident it will prove to be a similar hit to Cardiff. It’s such a great concept that people of all ages enjoy.” Quelch further highlighted the diverse range of experiences Proud Mary offers, catering to various preferences. “Whether you want to meet friends for a beer, listen to live music, watch sport, take part in a pub quiz, or enjoy a late-night party, Proud Mary delivers,” he stated. The company is committed to working tirelessly to ensure the bar opens as soon as possible this autumn.

The front of the bar will feature comfortable furniture and booth seating, complemented by a small stage for early week events such as live music. Additionally, patrons can expect a large-tiled bar serving a comprehensive range of drinks. The main room will house multiple screens for broadcasting sports events, while a mezzanine area with low benches, solid wooden beer shelves, and pergolas adorned with foliage and lights will provide a unique ambiance.

At the core of Proud Mary’s identity lies a sense of community and a celebration of local culture. The bar aims to incorporate Swansea-inspired artwork, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the city’s spirit while dancing to classic party tunes from every decade.

REKOM has previously brought three Nordic bars to Wales and the UK. Heidi’s Bier Bar, the first establishment introduced by the company, opened in Cardiff, followed by Birmingham. Reflecting on the success of Proud Mary and Heidi’s, Russell Quelch expressed enthusiasm for future expansions, stating, “Proud Mary and Heidi’s have exceeded our expectations, and we can’t wait to open more in the coming months and years.” Quelch attributed their success to the genuine and enjoyable experiences they provide, emphasizing that “you can’t fail to have a good time once you cross the threshold of either a Proud Mary or Heidi’s.”
