Ambulance left waiting outside Morriston Hospital for 28 hours

An ambulance remained stationed outside a hospital for an astonishing 28-hour period.

The Welsh Ambulance Service reported that at a certain point, there were 16 ambulances waiting outside the emergency department of Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

This issue extended to multiple locations throughout Wales, particularly within the Swansea Bay health board area.

The service advised individuals to utilize the 999 emergency number only in situations where their condition was “life or limb-threatening.”

Judith Bryce, the assistant director of operations at the Welsh Ambulance Service, highlighted that the service was grappling with “patient handover delays outside emergency departments” on Sunday.

“This is taking its toll on our ability to respond within the community,” she said.

“Today, approaching our declaration of an extraordinary incident, we have experienced multiple episodes of prolonged patient handover at multiple sites across Wales.”

She mentioned that extra managerial and clinical assistance had been drafted in at Morriston.

“Regrettably, this means that some patients may be asked to make alternative hospital travel arrangements if an ambulance is not available,” she said.

“We apologise for the consequence of this action and ask the public to please use services wisely.”
