Met Office forecasts that Storm Babet will bring heavy rain and strong winds to Wales

Unsettled weather is expected in Wales this week as the influence of Storm Babet takes hold.

The Met Office issued a heavy rain warning on Monday, October 16. On Tuesday evening, October 17, the wet and windy weather will extend into the western parts of the UK.

According to the forecast, Wednesday, October 18, will see the rain spreading more widely across the country, with heavy downpours anticipated throughout the day.

The rain will stall across central and northern areas of Scotland as it moves northward, becoming heavy and persistent from Thursday, October 19, through to Saturday, October 21.

While Storm Babet is not expected to make a direct landfall in Wales, a Met Office spokesperson confirmed that the country will experience some residual impacts from the storm, confirming that the weather would be “Turning increasingly unsettled through the period, with outbreaks of rain, heavy at times and stronger winds, especially over the higher ground. Temperatures returning back to average with milder nights.”

“The start of this period is likely to be very unsettled across much of the UK. Parts of northeast Britain in particular could see some further heavy, persistent rain, accompanied by strong to gale force winds. Further heavy rain and strong winds may also develop over or move into parts of southern Britain for a time, though this carries more limited confidence.

“The following week perhaps turning a little less unsettled, with the driest weather in the northeast and wettest conditions in the southwest, but rain and strong winds perhaps spreading to affect much of the UK at times. Temperatures will stay around average and probably oscillating between milder and colder spells throughout the forecast period.”

While there have been reports suggesting a “mini-heatwave” in mid-October for the UK, the Met Office offers a different perspective. According to their long-range weather forecast for the UK, unsettled weather is expected to persist from Friday, October 20, through to Sunday, October 29.
