Swifts edge towards title

MONKTON Swifts edged closer to the Division 1 title on Saturday (Apr 6) as they earned a 4-2 win over Hakin United.

Two wins from their final two games will give them 64 points, while title chasing Merlins Bridge can only reach 63 points if they win their remaining five games.

The Bridge will be relying on favours from other teams and the Vikings took the lead early on when Ryan Wilson’s free kick went over everyone and into the net.

However, moments later, the Swifts were level as Ben Steele, playing against his former team, headed on for Dylan Davies who knocked the ball in.

Both sides had chances to take the lead but it was the Swifts who eventually made the breakthrough.

Steele was involved again as he helped set up James Russell for an easy tap in to make it 2-1 shortly before half time.

In the second half the Swifts began to take control and they extended their lead when the ball was played through for Davies and he chipped the ball over Hakin keeper James Manson.

Steele came close to scoring but his shot bounced out off the bar while Russell also had another chance to score but saw his effort blocked by Manson.

The former Hakin man was then tripped in the box and the Swifts were awarded a penalty. Russell stepped up to score the penalty and make it 4-1.

The Vikings did pull a goal back shortly after when Justin Harding scored but it was just a consolation for the Vikings.

Hakin will look to bounce back in their next game on Wednesday (Apr 10) when they travel to Neyland.

Monkton Swifts’ next game sees them take on Merlins Bridge on April 24.
