Steps star Ian ‘H’ Watkins is set to be honoured with an 8ft statue in his local town of Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan. The statue, funded by private donations and designed by a local artist, will be installed outside the Bear Hotel, a central location chosen for its prominence on the main street of Cowbridge. This initiative, led by the local action group Cultural Cowbridge, aims to acknowledge Watkins’ contribution to British music and his impact on the community.
Cultural Cowbridge plans to officially unveil the statue in June, coinciding with Cowbridge Pride, an event founded by ‘H’ in 2022. Alongside his involvement with Cultural Cowbridge, ‘H’ is also a member of the Cowbridge with Llanblethian Town Council and is actively engaged in local affairs.
Ian ‘H’ Watkins, known for his work with Steps, as well as his roles as an actor, presenter, and broadcaster, expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating that it’s one of his proudest moments. He emphasised his love for Cowbridge and his commitment to contributing to its improvement and inclusivity.
Bethan Davies from Cultural Cowbridge praised Watkins’ deservingness of the statue and expressed excitement about installing it in the town centre. The project received significant support from private donors, reflecting the community’s appreciation for Watkins’ contributions.
