UK unites for Tesco food collection: A call for volunteers amidst rising need

Charities Trussell Trust and FareShare Seek Support to Aid Vulnerable Communities During the Winter Crisis

In the face of escalating demand at food banks and charities, the UK is rallying together for the upcoming Tesco Food Collection, scheduled to run from November 30 to December 2. Amidst a surge in people seeking assistance, the Trussell Trust and FareShare are issuing a fervent call for volunteers to engage in this vital initiative, helping bridge the widening gap between resources and need.

This winter, the Trussell Trust, boasting the largest food bank network in the UK, anticipates the distribution of over 1 million emergency food parcels between December and February. Simultaneously, FareShare, grappling with a staggering 1,500 frontline charities on its waiting list, faces the pressing challenge of supplying food to the most vulnerable members of society. Against this backdrop, the Tesco Food Collection emerges as a beacon of hope, offering a tangible way for communities to make a difference.

During this nationwide drive, Tesco shoppers are encouraged to donate long-life food items, thereby supporting the charities in their crucial endeavours. The contributions made to the Trussell Trust will enable the organisation to furnish emergency food parcels to those unable to afford essentials. Meanwhile, donations channelled to FareShare will reach its extensive network of 8,500 local charities and community groups, ensuring sustenance for those most in need.

Tesco, the driving force behind this campaign, is not only seeking donations but also calling on volunteers to staff collection points across their stores. These volunteers will play a pivotal role in raising awareness about the profound impact each donation can have. Tesco’s commitment to this cause is evident, with one in five Trussell Trust food parcels originating from Tesco and its compassionate customers.

Trussell Trust Chief Executive, Emma Revie, commented, “This winter is going to be the toughest yet for the food banks in our network as they will help approximately 600,000 people and provide an emergency parcel every eight seconds. The teams in our food banks are working tirelessly to ensure everyone receives the support they need but they cannot do it alone. By volunteering at the Tesco Winter Food Collection, you will not only be helping to gather much-needed donations to keep your local food bank going, but you’ll also be making a real difference to families who cannot afford the essentials in your community. If you can spare a few hours to volunteer, then please do.”

George Wright, Chief Executive at FareShare, added, “We anticipate need will keep rising as people continue to struggle to afford the essentials like food and heating this winter. Tesco’s support for FareShare throughout the cost of living crisis, and the last 11 years, has been unwavering, and we’re incredibly grateful for their support in helping drive more donations during what will be a difficult winter for many. Volunteers play a huge role in the success of the Tesco Food Collection each year. By giving up just three hours of your time, you can make a huge impact by helping more people understand the importance of donating food to FareShare during this increasingly difficult time.”

Claire De Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, highlighted the importance of community participation, stating, “Every year, our Winter Food Collection gets such an amazing response from our customers. We know that they give even more generously when we have volunteers in our stores helping them to choose the right items that are needed, so we would urge anyone who can to please sign up and help make a difference.”

As the nation braces for a challenging winter, the Tesco Food Collection stands as a testament to the power of unity and generosity. By joining hands and volunteering a few precious hours, individuals can illuminate the lives of those grappling with adversity, ensuring that no one in the UK goes to bed hungry.

For those willing to volunteer and be a part of this noble cause, sign-up options are available on the official websites of FareShare and the Trussell Trust. Let us stand together, embodying the spirit of compassion and community that defines the essence of humanity.
