Chimney stack falls off course

DEMOLITION experts who failed to correctly raze a chimney stack at Waterston’s Dragon LNG redeemed themselves yesterday (Thursday, October 1), well sort of.

Just after 2pm the Cogen chimney stack finally completed it’s not-so-easy journey to the ground having avoided being turned into rubble when attempts were made to demolish the long-standing tower 11 days before.

In a statement, Dragon LNG said: “We can confirm that following the incomplete demolition of the Cogen chimney stack on Sunday 20th September, the stack has been safely demolished today – 1st October 2020 at 14:12hrs.”

“We are working closely with our specialist contractor on the post demolition clean-up operation and will be deploying road sweepers and pressure washers to ensure the surrounding areas are cleaned if required.

“We would like to thank the residents of Waterston and the surrounding areas for their continued support.”

What the statement didn’t mention was that the second attempt to demolish the chimney stack is also believed to have gone a tad awry.

Sources close to the operation told The Herald that the Cogen tower was supposed to fall in a north-easterly direction but instead fell in a north-north-easterly direction and inadvertently destroyed several temporary buildings containing, The Herald has been told, office space, changing areas and tea and coffee making facilities used by the demolition experts whose job it was to safely reduce the chimney stack to rubble.
The purpose of the destroyed buildings has not been confirmed by Dragon LNG.

If footage of the successful attempt is studied, it’s possible to witness the destruction of both the chimney stack and the temporary buildings believed to have been used by the “specialist contractors”.
…gone!
