Diver dies in tragic accident near St Brides after falling onto rocks, police confirm

A DIVER has died in a tragic accident near St Brides, police have confirmed today (Feb 5).

Coastguards said that a man who had been diving near St Brides, Pembrokeshire had been exiting the water onto rocks when he slipped, fell and disappeared into the water just after 11.35am

Little and Broad Haven inshore lifeboat and St Davids all-weather lifeboat were launched at 11.49am and 11.53am respectively, the RNLI confirmed.

Wales Air Ambulance, along with a coastguard helicopter from Newquay in Cornwall, was also involved in the rescue operation. It is understood that the diver was from Cardiff and was one of three diving from the shoreline.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson said: “Dyfed-Powys Police was called just after 11.35am Saturday, February 5 to a report that a man who had been diving near St Brides, Pembrokeshire had been exiting the water onto rocks when he slipped, fell and disappeared into the water. A search was conducted and the man was found and retrieved from the water. Sadly, and despite medical assistance, the man died. Next of kin are aware and our thoughts remain with the family at this sad time.”

A spokesperson for Milford Haven Coastguard said: “A diver was recovered to the beach from the sea following an incident coordinated by HM Coastguard off the Pembrokeshire coast earlier today. The call regarding the incident was received at approximately 11.45 am from the Police, followed up by a 999 call.”
