Farmer risks life to save sheep

A FARMER put his life in his own hands on Saturday (Apr 13), as he scaled the cliffs to rescue one of his stranded sheep.

An RSPCA officer said the farmer was ‘incredibly frustrated’ with dog walkers walking their dogs off their leads and then them scaring the sheep.

Pictures were sent to HM Coastguard Broad Haven who posted them on their Facebook page.
They said: “We take nothing away from what this chap has chosen to do, however it could have ended so differently.

“Putting yourself in danger is never a good idea.

“The RSPCA were aware and were on route to enact the rescue safely.

“If you’re on the coast and see anyone/anything in difficulty please call the Coastguard who can task a team of highly trained personnel to perform a rescue safely for all concerned.”

Rescue: The farmer had to drag the sheep up the cliffs to safety

RSPCA Officer Ellie West was dealing with the incident and she also commented on the Facebook post saying: “The farmer of these sheep is extremely responsible and has grazed sheep in this area for many years but like many farmers is incredibly frustrated with dog walkers walking their dogs off leads and then them spooking the sheep.

“Our teams then have to put their lives at risk to rescue them which in turn cost the charity a large amount of money and obviously takes up huge resources of specifically trained personnel. Whilst I was there today I saw a dog off lead.

“Please, please don’t put yourself in danger and call the coastguard/RSPCA to report it appropriately for the correct procedures and trained personnel to deal with it.”
