Grieving mother warns of cyber bullying consequences

Megan Evans: Tragically took her own life

THE MOTHER of Megan Evans, the 14-year-old schoolgirl who suddenly died on Tuesday (Feb 7), has spoken out about the dangers of cyber bullying.

Talking to The Mirror, the print-partner of The Pembrokeshire Herald, Nicola Harteveld, 40, warned that her daughter was bullied on Snapchat, a social media network used on smartphones, without her knowledge.

She said: “It’s transpired she was being bullied on Snapchat. Unfortunately, there’s no getting away from it now – they have their phones 24/7.

“Be careful what you say, words can’t be taken back. They may seem trivial or may be said in anger or jest, but they can’t be taken back.

“You don’t know how that person will take it so be mindful of someone else’s situation. I want everyone to remember there’s always someone to talk to.

“I want to raise awareness of teen suicide. She took her own life. We just didn’t see any signs. I want people to be aware.

“That’s what makes it so difficult to understand because we didn’t see anything coming.

“We still don’t know why because she didn’t leave a note, but from what we have found out, there was some Snapchat bullying going on.

“We had a note from a little boy who lived down the road who said ‘I was being bullied and she helped me’.”
