Merlins Bridge: Lorry transporting excavator freed from bridge

TRAFFIC was congested on the A4076 at Merlins Bridge last night (Feb 12) as a lorry which was transporting an excavator became stuck under the railway bridge.

The incident, which happened at approximately 7pm, saw police controlling traffic as firefighters attempted to safely remove the trapped vehicle.

The road was closed with motorists being diverted through Pembroke Road and Tiers Cross.

One of the methods used to move the lorry included deflating its tyres.

The underneath of the bridge which came into contact with the excavator was inspected for structural damage when the lorry was finally freed.

The incident happens just days before the railway bridge – which is coming to the end of its lifespan – is scheduled to be replaced.

The A4076 will be closed from 7pm on Friday (Feb 15) until 6am on Monday (Feb 18), as part of a £4.25m Network Rail upgrade.

The height of the bridge will be increased by 12 inches during the replacement – although that would not have prevented this lorry from getting stuck.
