Milford Haven mother admits child ill treatment; case adjourned for sentence

A MOTHER from the Milford Haven area who spent the afternoon drinking with her young son, has pleaded guilty to one charge of ill treating a child and one charge of assault by beating of an emergency worker.

The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (Apr 19) to face the two charges.

Linda Baker, for the Crown Prosecution Service, told the court how a concerned member of the public called the police after witnessing the defendant in a state of intoxication and being helped up the steps to their flat by their young son.

When police arrived at the defendant’s home, they were let into the property by the 10-year-old and found the woman asleep on the sofa.

The son explained ‘my mothers a bit drunk’.

When approached by the officer, the woman lashed out and assaulted PC Fecci.

Linda Baker went on to describe the contents of the officer’s body worn footage which shows the young boy sat cowering in a corner over the ordeal.

The court heard how the woman and her son had met up with friends at a local bowling alley to watch the rugby and had approximately six pints of lager.

Ms Baker asked the magistrates to refer the case to crown court, citing: “I request that the matter be referred to the Crown Court because of the psychological damage it might have had on her son”.

Magistrates adjourned the case to May 18 so that the probation service can compile a pre-sentence report.

The defendant was released on bail on the condition that no direct or indirect contact be made with the son, who is now in the custody of their father in Devon.
