Police confirm fire at multi-storey car park being treated as suspicious

THE FIRE at the multi-storey car park in Haverfordwest is being treated as suspicious, police have confirmed.

The blaze broke out in the north tower of the building at around 9.30pm on Tuesday night (Jul 13), and crews were on scene until well after midnight dampening down.

Firefighters from several stations attended, including from Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock.

No injuries were reported at the time of going to press.

Smoke was seen rising high over Haverfordwest, with many locals posting pictures on social media.

The main road was closed whist the incident was being dealt with, and police tape was put up at the exits of Riverside Shopping Centre, to safeguard the public.

A spokesperson for the police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating a fire which occurred last night, Tuesday 12th July, at the multistorey car park, Cartlett Road, Haverfordwest. The car park was not in use.
“The fire is currently being treated as suspicious.

A council spokesperson said in a statement: “Damage has been caused to a stairwell at Haverfordwest multi-storey car park in a fire last night (Jul 12).

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Firefighters extinguished the blaze which is being treated as suspicious by Dyfed-Powys Police.

Pembrokeshire County Council will now assess the full extent of the damage and liaise with the emergency services.

The multi-storey car park has been closed to the public since Monday 20th June for initial works ahead of full demolition and the site has been secured with fencing.
