Possible closure of Whitland recycling centre

ALISTAIR CAMERON, Welsh Liberal Democrat National Assembly Candidate for West Carmarthen and South Pembrokeshire, has written to Ainsley Williams, Head of Waste and Environmental Services,  Carmarthenshire County Council opposing plansto close Whitland Household Recycling Centre. The Council will be deciding aspart of its discussions on next year’s Budget whether to close the centre with effect from 1 April 2021.

Alistair said: “Whitland Household Recycling Centre is a highly valued local amenity and its closure would be a major loss to Whitland and the surrounding area.

Some residents have informed me that they would face a 30 mile round trip to the nearest alternative centre at Nant-y-Caws. “The recycling centre’s closure will be particularly hard on those with low incomes and those who do not have access to a car. It would also, unfortunately, lead to an increase in fly-tipping. “At a time when we all need to be reducing our carbon-footprint, the last thing people need is to be undertaking long journeys to get their waste recycled.  “I appreciate that the Council faces significant challenges with setting their budget but would urge them to consider all alternatives and not close the centre.”
