Post-16 education investigated in local government challenge

TEN local government officers from across the country have been investigating Pembrokeshire’s post-16 education system this week as part of a two-day challenge.

The LG Challenge 2020 saw the officers visiting Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi in St Davids, Milford Haven School and Pembrokeshire College as part of their research.

The challenge, set by the education authority, was ‘How can Pembrokeshire County Council support post 16 learners to ensure that they are on the right course in the right place and help achieve the Council’s vision of ‘every learner achieves more than they thought possible?’

Participants presented their business case and proposals on Thursday (5th March) to a judging panel which included Steven Richard-Downes, Pembrokeshire County Council’s Acting Director for Children and Schools.

He said: “We are delighted that ten contestants competing in two teams provided innovate and creative solutions to the challenges we face. The contestants have worked under pressure to produce a set of solutions that challenge us as a Council to ensure that we achieve the best outcomes for learners.

“We thank them and the Local Government Association for ensuring the challenge has been a success.”

The LG Challenge is run and organised by the Local Government Association (LGA) and Pembrokeshire is the first Welsh local authority to host the event.

This year’s participants will visit five local councils in total and those who make the last four will be set a final challenge at the 2020 Annual LGA Conference in Harrogate.
