Riot police will be on standby in Pembrokeshire from Brexit day

PEMBROKESHIRE will be the only county in the Dyfed-Powys Police area with specialist police units on standby after March 29 to quell any civil unrest caused by Brexit.

Home to an oil refinery, and two major natural gas terminals as well as two important ferry ports connecting the UK to Ireland, Pembrokeshire is a special location for extra police resources, it has been decided.

In a letter, Chief Inspector Amanda Diggens has asked all Pembrokeshire County Councillors to tell police of any rising tensions in the run-up to the UK leaving the European Union.

The letter says: “Early identification of any tensions will greatly assist us to ensure that we provide the most effective response, to protect, support and provide reassurance to all members of our local communities

“Some elected representatives across other areas of the UK have raised concerns linked to their personal security based on their individual stance on Brexit, before reassuring councillors in Pembrokeshire.
“We have not received any intelligence or information to suggest that there are any such tensions in our local area, or that there has been any hostility directed towards local representatives in Pembrokeshire.
“However, if you have any such concerns, please do not hesitate to let us know via any of the reporting mechanisms detailed above.”
The Herald understands that Dafydd Llywelyn, police and crime commissioner for Dyfed-Powys Police made a bid for resources to be put in place to prevent civil unrest after Brexit.
The bid, made last month, was successful. The police units involved will be specially trained to deal with crowds of people.”
