Tenby footballer chosen to play at World Transplant Games

A LOCAL footballer, Adam Hughes, from Tenby, has been selected to play for the Great Britain Transplant Football team in the World Transplant Games.

Adam was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Failure in April 2013. Having undergone nearly 18 months of daily dialysis for 10 hours at a time, he was given a new lease of life when he received a Kidney Transplant in October 2014.

A very keen sportsman and footballer, Adam continued to partake in sports across the county, more recently a player manager role for Carew AFC in the Pembrokeshire League, a five a side league for Gobaith Cymru FC (a south Wales transplant charity team) and the Wales Transplant Team.

The Rhondda based Gobaith Cymru FC (hope for Wales), was set up by liver transplantee Ywain Shakespeare for those who have received or waiting for a transplant, or those experiencing Mental Health difficulties.

Whilst playing for Transplant Wales, Adam ‘caught the eye’ of the British Selectors and was invited to trial for the Great British Transplant Team last autumn.

Following his successful trial, he will be representing Great Britain in the World Transplant Games in August 2019 at Gateshead International Stadium.

Transplant Sport does not receive any funding and all the athletes have to support
their own expenditure. This includes paying a registration fee of £425, purchasing kit at £325 and paying all their own travel and accommodation costs. In addition there will be squad training sessions pre the games at Warwick University.

Adam will also be representing the Wales team at the GB Transplant games which are this year being held in Newport, Gwent in July.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Adam with his expenditure, those wishing to support Adam can do so by searching for ‘Adam John Hughes Transplant Sport’.

All funds will be used strictly to assist Adam in his Transplant Sport expenses, any surplus will be donated to the Kidney Wales Charity.
