AN ANGLESEY undertaker’s £400k investment has secured the future of a historic chapel in the centre of Llangefni, creating a brand-new community hub for the town.
Four years after Arwel Hughes, owner of R & J Hughes and Son Funeral Directors, bought Penuel Chapel, the refurbishment is now complete, and the business is proud to offer its services, as well as a brand-new local venue.
When the chapel came up for sale, it was an opportunity too good to miss, according to Arwel, as he extended his family’s business to Llangefni. With so many chapels closing and falling into disrepair, he says he is proud to have been able to play a role in safeguarding this particular building’s future.
“It’s been an exciting time for us as a business and with the Penuel refurbishment completed, we’re keen now to open our doors to the whole community.”
He adds, “The building had been empty for many years and was in danger of deteriorating further when we received the keys back in 2020. We’re so pleased that we’ve been able to preserve the chapel and its history.
” Our intention had always been to add value to the old building and to our business, so we’ve made the most of the original features including the stained windows and woodwork. We’ve invested in making this a hub the community can use, as well as offering excellent funeral services.”
A company founded in Amlwch over 100 years ago – around the same time Penuel was built. Arwel is the fourth generation of the family to be involved with John Hughes, now part of R&J Hughes. A well-known character in his community he, and the company are proud of their Anglesey roots and their close links with the local community.
As a business, they have always been keen to innovate, from the use of technology – Arwel was the first to livestream a funeral locally during the pandemic- to their environmental practices and community involvement. With an open invitation for community groups and clubs to use the new facilities in Llangefni, the latest chapter at Penuel will be no different.
