EFFORTS are underway to increase the number of stall holders at Llangefni Market and give the local economy a boost.
There are currently only a handful of regular stalls at the market, which is held every Thursday and Saturday.
Emyr Owen, of Tatws Trading, has now signed a licence agreement to manage Llangefni Market on behalf of the Isle of Anglesey County Council. This comes after the previous agreement with Llangefni Social Enterprise ended.
New market manager, Emyr has a wealth of experience with his popular fruit and veg stall regularly seen at markets across North Wales for decades.
Also a long-term stall-holder at Llangefni, Emyr said, “I want to see the buzz of a large market return to Llangefni once again. By attracting more and varied stall holders here, on both a Thursday and Saturday, we hope to reverse the market’s decline, and see it grow and go from strength-to-strength.”
“If we bring in a proper mix of quality stalls then customers are going to come back. Trade for businesses in the town will also, hopefully, improve on market days, boosting the local economy.”
It’s hoped that the return of a thriving market will bring more visitors to the town centre and help improve trade amongst businesses on market days.
Anglesey Council’s Planning, Public Protection and Climate Change portfolio holder, Councillor Nicola Roberts, said, “Llangefni Market was once an integral part of the town’s economy, and we want to try to restore it to its former glory.”
“With Emyr’s contacts across North Wales and support from officers in our Public Protection team, we hope he can achieve this as the new market manager. I wish Emyr the best of luck going forward.”
She added, “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Llangefni Social Enterprise and its volunteers for their hard work to manage the market in recent years.”
