New balcony seating plan above Llandudno high street proposed

Cafe Culture

DINERS in Llandudno could soon enjoy a slice of cake or cup of coffee on an outdoor first-floor balcony – if plans get the go-ahead.

Jamilla Dickens has applied to Conwy County Council, seeking planning permission to allow her to install an external seating area at Café Culture at 79 Mostyn Street.

The plans for the four-storey grade-two listed building will go before Conwy’s planning committee.

But Llandudno Town Council has already objected to the proposals and has written to Conwy, insisting the plans are ‘not in keeping with the street scene of the conservation area’. Despite the opposition, the developers say the balcony would be ‘in context’ to the buildings in the surrounding area.

Information provided by the architects revealed the café’s ground floor will remain untouched. But the new balcony seating would be accessed via a main stairway from St George’s Place and from within the existing cafe facing Mostyn Street.

A statement from the architect reads: “The proposal seeks to ensure that the development is informed by its context. Thus, design of the balcony has taken precedent from similar existing conditions within the surrounding area.”

According to the application, the plans would not create any extra jobs at the café. The planning application will be debated at a future Conwy County Council planning meeting at Bodlondeb.
