Popular cafe in Cerrigydrudion could be demolished

Applicant Mr O. Roberts has submitted an application to Conwy County Council’s planning department, seeking permission to demolish the Ty Lan Café off the A5.

A “POPULAR” North Wales café could be demolished and replaced with new retails units.

An application has been submitted to Conwy Council’s planning department, seeking permission to demolish the Ty Lan Café off the A5 in Cerrigydrudion.

The café is described in the application as popular, but the applicant, named as Mr O Roberts, wants to knock the building down and build mixed-use retail units in its place.

The developer says the five retail units could be used as a café, hairdressers and bike repair shop as examples, with the provision of toilets included.

The café currently employs one full-time member of staff and two part-time staff members.

The developer believes the new units will create 14 full-time and six part-time jobs.

Mr Roberts said the site is prominent and a well-known stop for passing trade.

He said in his application: “The proposed building is designed as single storey to ensure they do not dominate the site or interfere with the sight lines of the surrounding countryside.

“The site will receive further biodiversity enhancements with new planting of native fruit trees to the car park area, and the existing hedging to the rear will be infilled with native hawthorn to increase and enhance a solid boundary.”

The planning application will likely be discussed at a future Conwy planning committee meeting.
