AFTER more than two decades, amateur boxing made its long-awaited return to Denbigh yesterday with a spectacular show hosted by Denbigh & District Amateur Boxing Club. The event marked a major milestone for the town and club alike, drawing a packed crowd to Denbigh Town Hall for an afternoon of exciting grassroots boxing.
The show featured 16 well-matched bouts, including four skills contests. The competitive bouts that followed showcased impressive fitness and determination from both local and visiting boxers. All the boxers involved showed great sportsmanship throughout the afternoon, reflecting the true spirit of amateur boxing.
Clubs from across Wales and the North West travelled to Denbigh to compete, including:
- Llandudno ABC
- Maelor ABC
- Wrexham ABC
- Draig Goch ABC
- Dyffryn ABC
- Round4RoundAK ABC (Bolton)
- Hamer ABC (Manchester)
The event not only highlighted the growing talent within Denbigh’s own ranks but also celebrated the camaraderie and mutual respect that define the amateur boxing community.
Coach Tony Murphy said: “This was a proud moment for us all. We’ve worked hard to get the club to where it is now. Seeing our boxers in the ring here in Denbigh and welcoming clubs from across the region shows how far we’ve come.”
Thanks to the generous support and sponsorship shown at the event, the club hopes to continue putting more of its boxers into national championships, helping to develop local talent and raise the club’s profile even further. Several Denbigh & District boxers are also expected to appear on other shows in the region in the coming weeks.
The show was made possible by the dedication of the club’s volunteer coaches and the support of sponsors. Special thanks were extended to main sponsors Jones Bros Civil Engineering and Peak Marquee Hire Ltd, as well as a host of other local backers who contributed to the event’s success.
Boxing is well and truly back in Denbigh – and with the strength of its club and the support of its community, it is set to stay.
