A FORMER village chapel could be transformed into a furniture workshop.
Mr D. Poole has applied to Denbighshire County Council’s planning department, seeking permission to convert the Salem Chapel at Cyffylliog, Ruthin, into a business.
The building was formerly a chapel and schoolroom, but its use is now described as ‘redundant’.
If granted permission, the building will be used for storage and as a workshop for high-quality furniture restoration.
A planning statement reads: “The applicant bought Capel Salem in 2024, following its closure by Eglwys Bresbyteraidd Cymru due to falling congregation numbers and disproportionately high running costs.
“The change of use is needed for the new owner, the applicant, to use the chapel and attached schoolroom and vestry for their business, which is high-end furniture restoration.
“The owner will live permanently in the attached house, which will remain a dwelling and therefore is not included in this application.
“The furniture restoration business focuses on high-end products, using hand tools and craftsmanship to achieve the necessary finish.
The chapel space will be used for display and storage on display, while the schoolroom will be used for workshop space, and the vestry will be used for welfare accommodation—kitchen/WCs etc.
“In the chapel space, fittings associated with the chapel use will be removed—pews, pulpit etc, but the space will otherwise be maintained as one. The exterior of the buildings will remain unaltered, except for necessary redecoration.”
The plans include parking, and neighbours are yet to be consulted.
The plans will likely be discussed at a future Denbighshire County Council planning committee meeting.
