Sam Rowlands MS visits Pengwern College on St David’s Day

SAM ROWLANDS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, finds out more about the work of a North Wales independent provider of specialist further education.

Mr Rowlands, a keen supporter of special needs education recently visited Pengwern College, in Rhuddlan.

Pengwern College, is an independent provider of specialist further education in North Wales with day students and boarding students, aged 16 to 25 with a learning disability and complex needs.

Their one person-centred approach ensures that students have an individualised learning programme developed to effectively match their needs, personal decisions and aspirations, be the focus on daily living skills, vocational qualifications or independent living.

All students gain important life skills and achieve meaningful qualifications, evidencing our commitment to enabling increased choice and independence.

Rowlands said, “I was delighted to have the opportunity to have a look around this impressive campus and chat to staff and students about the college.

“Pengwern College is a provider of specialist further education for 16-25 year olds with learning disabilities or complex needs, it is an excellent establishment.

“During my tour of the campus I was able to see for myself how much the students enjoy the college environment, from growing plants in the greenhouse to looking after animals.

“I was also able to discuss additional learning needs in Wales as it lags far behind England in its provision. English students are funded for up to five years while Welsh students are only funded for two which is a great shame as there is a huge disparity in what students can achieve in two or five years.
