PLANS to develop a former Bangor nightclub into homes has been welcomed as part of hopes to regenerate the city centre.
There were no objections to a scheme to convert the former, empty Lounge club and bar building on High Street.
Cyngor Gwynedd’s planning committee yesterday approved a full application which called for the change of use and conversion of 340-342 High Street, into nine one-bedroom self-contained flats.
The application had been made by Llion Thomas of Penmaenmawr JAT Construction Ltd, through Huw Evans, of Chester-based Huw Evans Planning.
The building has seen many uses over the years including being a sports bar and a Conservative Club.
Bangor City Council had supported the application on grounds that “it could help improve the image of Bangor High Street”.
A letter in the plans, from the council’s City Director Martin Hanks, stated that the development “is keeping with Welsh Government policies to transform previous commercial premises into living accommodation in Town Centres.”
He added the plans also “mirror the City Council”s objectives to re-generate that area of the City”.
The plans stated that the project would generate two full-time and two part- time jobs and that the footprint of the existing building will remain unchanged.
The highways authority had also stated the plans would not “have an adverse effect on any highway, or proposed highway”.
Residents would also use existing nearby public parking at Plas Llwyd, the plans stated.
A Cyngor Gwynedd spokesperson said: “At yesterday’s meeting of the Council’s Planning Committee, members accepted the recommendation to allow change of use of former night club to nine self-contained one-bedroom flats at 340 High Street, Bangor.”
Bangor Dwyrain ward Councillor Dylan Fearnley said: “That area of Bangor High Street already has lots of flats above the shops. So, there were no objections to developing more and it is better for there to be homes developed than it being an empty building.”
