Shop refuses to sell ‘The Sun’ amid allegations against BBC presenter Huw Edwards

A SHOP in Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd, called Siop Dewi, has taken a stand by refusing to sell The Sun newspaper due to allegations made against BBC news presenter Huw Edwards. The decision was announced on the shop’s Facebook page, where they explained their stance in light of the accusations against Edwards.

Dewi Lewis, the owner of Siop Dewi, expressed his unprecedented decision during an interview with the Post Prynhawn program on BBC Radio Cymru. Lewis, who has been selling newspapers for nearly 50 years, stated, “I’ve never taken a decision like this before. But after the treatment Huw Edwards has had at the hands of the Sun, I now feel that this is the right thing to do.” He further emphasized his belief that The Sun had damaged Edwards’ reputation, leading to his resolution to cease selling the newspaper, referring to it as a “rag.”

The Sun finds itself facing significant scrutiny and questioning of its reporting and ethical standards following the allegations it published against Huw Edwards. The newspaper claimed that Edwards had paid a 17-year-old for explicit images, but police investigations concluded that there was no evidence to support this serious criminal accusation.

Upon Siop Dewi’s announcement that they would no longer sell The Sun, the shop received an overwhelming amount of support from the public. This prompted the shop to post a follow-up message on Facebook, expressing their gratitude, saying, “Thank you very much to everyone who has supported our decision to stop selling The Sun. Thinking of Huw Edwards and everyone else suffering from mental health illness. Hoping that we listen more to each other and be kinder to all. Let’s all support each other; you are all welcome here.”

Siop Dewi’s principled refusal to sell The Sun newspaper has sparked a conversation about media ethics and the treatment of public figures. The decision has resonated with individuals who have shown their solidarity and appreciation for the shop’s stance on this matter.
