Wrexham AFC kicks off major pitch upgrade ahead of Championship comeback

BIG changes are underway at the STōK Cae Ras as Wrexham AFC begins work on a brand-new hybrid stitch pitch – a major step forward as the club gets ready for its long-awaited return to the Championship for the first time in 43 years.

It’s not just a fresh surface being laid down, either. The overhaul includes a full suite of modern features – from undersoil heating to upgraded irrigation and drainage systems – all designed to keep the pitch in top condition, whatever the Welsh weather throws at it.

The upgrade is part of a wider push to get the ground ready for the demands of second-tier football. With three back-to-back promotions now under their belt, Wrexham’s rapid rise through the leagues has been nothing short of incredible. This latest move shows they’re not just aiming to survive in the Championship – they’re planning to make a serious impact.

There’s a lot more happening behind the scenes too. Work is already in motion on a new 5,500-seat Kop stand, which will include safe standing areas, hospitality suites, and facilities that meet UEFA’s highest standards. That development, approved earlier this year, is a clear signal of the club’s long-term ambition both on and off the pitch.

It’s a significant investment – reportedly around £1 million for the pitch work alone – but one that fans and club officials alike see as essential. The hybrid surface, which combines natural grass with synthetic fibres, will ensure a more durable, reliable playing field all season long, helping the team perform at their best and avoid disruptions due to poor conditions.

The club expects the new pitch to be ready in time for the 2025/26 campaign, giving Phil Parkinson’s side a perfect platform as they prepare to mix it with some of the biggest names in English football once again.

Exciting times in North Wales – and if this summer’s progress is anything to go by, Wrexham’s journey is only just getting started.
