New mayor and returning leader confirmed at Bridgend council’s annual meeting

A NEW mayor for Bridgend County Borough Council has been elected at the authority’s annual meeting of council alongside a returning leader.

Long-standing member Cllr Huw David was as sworn in as the mayor of the borough at a meeting held on May 14.

His appointment came alongside a separate vote for the leader of Bridgend County Borough Council with Labour representative Cllr John Spanswick retaining the role for the 2025-26 financial year.

Councillor David of Pyle, Kenfig Hill, and Cefn Cribwr will take over the role as mayor from councillor Heather Griffiths with councillor Heidi Bennett of Pen-y-fai acting as deputy mayor.

The youth mayor of Bridgend County Borough will be Phoebe Evans and Adam Cloutier will serve as deputy youth mayor.

Cllr David, who has lived in Cefn Cribwr his whole life, was first elected as a local council member in 2004 and also  served as leader of the council from 2016 to 2024.

Speaking after his appointment he said: “I’m exceptionally proud to have been elected as the new mayor of our county borough. Thank you for all your support – it’s truly appreciated.

“Together with the new deputy mayor, Cllr Bennett, I am looking forward to serving all our towns, valleys, villages, hamlets – all fantastic communities that we are all very lucky to represent.”

Newly-returned leader Cllr John Spanswick said: “Thank you to everyone who voted for me.

“I know that we may have our political differences and will not agree on everything but we are still one group, representing the residents of the county borough of Bridgend, and I want to work with everybody here.”
