Plans for 20 flats at former Bridgend social club site submitted

AN APPLICATION has been submitted to Bridgend Council to create 20 new residential flats at a former social club and community centre.

The proposals would see developers from local housing association Valleys to Coast, create 20 flats on land at the former Bettws Social Club, west of Heol Dewi Sant.

If approved by council bosses, the site of the former club would be demolished to make way for 20 one-bedroom dwellings. These would be split across two buildings, along with 21 parking spaces, cycle storage, and landscaping and ancillary works.

Each block of flats would be three storeys high, with a buff brick design which developers have said will allow the scheme to “sit well within its context,” facing onto Heol Dewi Sant.

The report read: “The site consists of 3 buildings. The main building, previously used as a community club, is situated to the south of the site. There is a smaller building located immediately adjacent to the north, whilst a further small outbuilding is located to the northeast of the site. The remainder of the land is used for parking and access. The site currently benefits from two accesses onto Heol Dewi Sant.”

It added: “This application seeks planning permission for the demolition of the existing buildings and erection of 20 flats at Heol Dewi Sant, Bettws. The scheme proposes the erection of two buildings.

“Block 1 is proposed to be roughly L-shaped in design and would be located towards the southern edge of the site. The block would be part 3-storey and part 2-storey and contained 11 flats, with the height of the building stepping down towards the boundary shared with Garw Valley Childcare Centre.

“Block 2 is proposed to be more rectangular, yet smaller, in footprint and is located to the northern end of the site. This block would be 3 storeys in height and is proposed to contain 9 flats.”

The development has been submitted by Swansea-based Castell Group on behalf of the Valleys to Coast housing association, and will be considered by Bridgend County Borough’s planning department in the coming months.
